Chapter 70

Stone, ceramic and glass

Chapter 70 of the Harmonized Tariff Schedule sits in section XIII (stone, ceramic and glass). It has 19 headings and 198 eight-digit tariff lines.

The spread of 38 percentage points between the cheapest and dearest lines makes misclassification expensive here.

53 of its 192 lines with a percentage rate are duty-free at the general rate (28%) and 139 are dutiable, from duty-free up to 38%. The median line pays 5%.

6 of the lines carry specific or compound rates (per kilogram, per dozen and so on) rather than a percentage, so their burden depends on the unit value of the goods.

The most finely divided heading is 7019 (glass fibers (including glass wool) and articles thereof (for example, yarn…), with 59 lines; fine division usually means the rates or the trade statistics differ enough to be worth separating.

1 of its 19 headings is entirely duty-free at the general rate: 7015 (clock or watch glasses and similar glasses…).
