Analysis

NAICS 112511 is the 2022 national industry for finfish farming and fish hatcheries, part of 11251 (Aquaculture). Census lists 13 example activities under it in the official index.

Its index entries, the activities Census uses to assign businesses to this code, include baitfish production, farm raising, catfish production, farm raising, finfish production, farm raising and finfish, hatcheries, among 13 in all.

Its goods appear in 19 statistical lines of the US tariff schedule, mostly under headings 0301 (live fish), 0302 (fish, fresh or chilled, excluding fish fillets and other…) and 0304 (fish fillets and other fish meat (whether or not minced)…). That link is how import data is matched to domestic producers, for example in trade-remedy cases.

For example, the catching or taking of finfish from their natural habitat are classified in 114111 (Finfish Fishing) instead.

Census lists 1 related activities that belong elsewhere, most often in 114111. Businesses that do several things are classified by their primary activity, the one that generates the most value, so check those boundaries before settling on this code.

County Business Patterns does not cover crop and animal production, so there is no establishment count for it; farms are counted by the Census of Agriculture instead.
