Analysis

NAICS 333611 is the 2022 national industry for turbine and turbine generator set units manufacturing, part of 33361 (Engine, Turbine, and Power Transmission Equipment Manufacturing). Census lists 15 example activities under it in the official index.

County Business Patterns counts 199 US establishments in this code in 2023, employing 25,748 people at an average annual payroll of $100,366 per employee (84th percentile of national industries). 28% of the establishments have fewer than five employees, which is close to the national mix.

By establishments it ranks 4th of the 4 codes at this level within Engine, Turbine, and Power Transmission Equipment Manufacturing, with 22.1% of them.

Between 2018 and 2023 the number of establishments fell 12% and employment fell 22%. The 2018 count used NAICS 2017, so part of a large move can come from codes being redefined rather than from businesses opening or closing.

Its index entries, the activities Census uses to assign businesses to this code, include gas turbine generator set units manufacturing, gas turbines (except aircraft) manufacturing, generator sets, turbine (e.g., gas, hydraulic, steam)… and governors, steam, manufacturing, among 15 in all.

Its goods appear in 42 statistical lines of the US tariff schedule, mostly under headings 8406 (steam turbines and other vapor turbines, and parts thereof), 8411 (turbojets, turbopropellers and other gas turbines, and…) and 8410 (hydraulic turbines, water wheels and regulators therefor…). That link is how import data is matched to domestic producers, for example in trade-remedy cases.
