Analysis

NAICS 333992 is the 2022 national industry for welding and soldering equipment manufacturing, part of 33399 (All Other General Purpose Machinery Manufacturing). Census lists 16 example activities under it in the official index.

Between 2018 and 2023 the number of establishments grew 50% and employment rose 6%. The 2018 count used NAICS 2017, so part of a large move can come from codes being redefined rather than from businesses opening or closing.

County Business Patterns counts 553 US establishments in this code in 2023, employing 16,525 people at an average annual payroll of $83,721 per employee (73rd percentile of national industries). 55% of the establishments have fewer than five employees, which is close to the national mix.

By establishments it ranks 1st of the 6 codes at this level within All Other General Purpose Machinery Manufacturing, with 16% of them.

Its index entries, the activities Census uses to assign businesses to this code, include arc-welding equipment manufacturing, electrode holders, welding, manufacturing, electrodes, welding, manufacturing and electron beam welding equipment manufacturing, among 16 in all.

Its goods appear in 19 statistical lines of the US tariff schedule, mostly under headings 8515 (electric (including electrically heated gas), laser or…), 8468 (machinery and apparatus for soldering, brazing or welding…) and 8311 (wire, rods, tubes, plates, electrodes and similar products…). That link is how import data is matched to domestic producers, for example in trade-remedy cases.
