Analysis

NAICS 336212 is the 2022 national industry for truck trailer manufacturing, part of 33621 (Motor Vehicle Body and Trailer Manufacturing). Census lists 11 example activities under it in the official index.

Between 2018 and 2023 the number of establishments grew 28% and employment rose 15%. The 2018 count used NAICS 2017, so part of a large move can come from codes being redefined rather than from businesses opening or closing.

County Business Patterns counts 569 US establishments in this code in 2023, employing 45,403 people at an average annual payroll of $57,533 per employee (28th percentile of national industries). 22% of the establishments have fewer than five employees, which points to larger operations.

Its index entries, the activities Census uses to assign businesses to this code, include automobile transporter trailers, multi-car, manufacturing, boat transporter trailers, multi-unit, manufacturing, demountable cargo containers manufacturing and dump trailers manufacturing, among 11 in all.

Its goods appear in 8 statistical lines of the US tariff schedule, mostly under headings 8716 (trailers and semi-trailers; other vehicles, not…). That link is how import data is matched to domestic producers, for example in trade-remedy cases.

For example, manufacturing utility trailers, light-truck trailers, and travel trailers are classified in 336214 (Travel Trailer and Camper Manufacturing) instead.
