Analysis

NAICS 423330 is the 2022 national industry for roofing, siding, and insulation material merchant wholesalers, part of 42333 (Roofing, Siding, and Insulation Material Merchant Wholesalers). Census lists 19 example activities under it in the official index.

County Business Patterns counts 3,581 US establishments in this code in 2023, employing 50,236 people at an average annual payroll of $86,596 per employee (75th percentile of national industries). 25% of the establishments have fewer than five employees, which points to larger operations.

Its index entries, the activities Census uses to assign businesses to this code, include asphalt felts and coatings merchant wholesalers, asphalt roofing shingles merchant wholesalers, ceramic and clay roofing materials merchant wholesalers and eavestroughing merchant wholesalers, among 19 in all.

Between 2018 and 2023 the number of establishments grew 8% and employment rose 8%. The 2018 count used NAICS 2017, so part of a large move can come from codes being redefined rather than from businesses opening or closing.

For example, the merchant wholesale distribution of wood roofing and wood siding are classified in 423310 (Lumber, Plywood, Millwork, and Wood Panel Merchant Wholesalers) instead.

Census lists 1 related activities that belong elsewhere, most often in 423310. Businesses that do several things are classified by their primary activity, the one that generates the most value, so check those boundaries before settling on this code.
