Analysis

NAICS 713920 is the 2022 national industry for skiing facilities, part of 71392 (Skiing Facilities). Census lists 8 example activities under it in the official index.

County Business Patterns counts 348 US establishments in this code in 2023, employing 74,471 people at an average annual payroll of $19,110 per employee (1st percentile of national industries). 13% of the establishments have fewer than five employees, which points to larger operations.

Its index entries, the activities Census uses to assign businesses to this code, include alpine skiing facilities without accommodations, cross country skiing facilities without accommodations, downhill skiing facilities without accommodations and four season ski resorts without accommodations, among 8 in all.

For example, operating resorts where skiing facilities are combined with accommodations are classified in 7211 (Traveler Accommodation) instead.

Census lists 1 related activities that belong elsewhere, most often in 7211. Businesses that do several things are classified by their primary activity, the one that generates the most value, so check those boundaries before settling on this code.

Between 2018 and 2023 the number of establishments grew 3% and employment rose 7%. The 2018 count used NAICS 2017, so part of a large move can come from codes being redefined rather than from businesses opening or closing.
