Analysis
NAICS 811490 is the 2022 national industry for other personal and household goods repair and maintenance, part of 81149 (Other Personal and Household Goods Repair and Maintenance). Census lists 24 example activities under it in the official index.
County Business Patterns counts 11,482 US establishments in this code in 2023, employing 40,317 people at an average annual payroll of $45,706 per employee (13th percentile of national industries). 80% of the establishments have fewer than five employees, which marks it as a small-business industry.
Between 2018 and 2023 the number of establishments grew 11% and employment rose 15%. The 2018 count used NAICS 2017, so part of a large move can come from codes being redefined rather than from businesses opening or closing.
Census lists 6 related activities that belong elsewhere, most often in 811411, 811412, 811420 and 811430. Businesses that do several things are classified by their primary activity, the one that generates the most value, so check those boundaries before settling on this code.
Its index entries, the activities Census uses to assign businesses to this code, include bicycle repair and maintenance shops without retailing new…, boat, pleasure, repair and maintenance services without…, china repair services and clock repair shops without retailing new clocks, among 24 in all.
For example, repairing home and garden equipment are classified in 811411 (Home and Garden Equipment Repair and Maintenance) instead.
