Analysis
NAICS 3119 is the 2022 industry group for other food manufacturing, part of 311 (Food Manufacturing). Census lists 138 example activities under it in the official index.
Between 2018 and 2023 the number of establishments grew 22% and employment rose 19%. The 2018 count used NAICS 2017, so part of a large move can come from codes being redefined rather than from businesses opening or closing.
County Business Patterns counts 4,836 US establishments in this code in 2023, employing 257,870 people at an average annual payroll of $60,100 per employee (32nd percentile of national industries). 38% of the establishments have fewer than five employees, which is close to the national mix.
Across its national industries Census lists 138 index entries; typical ones are canned nuts manufacturing, cheese curls and puffs manufacturing, coffee concentrates (i.e., instant coffee) manufacturing and beverage bases manufacturing.
Its goods appear in 195 statistical lines of the US tariff schedule, mostly under headings 2106 (food preparations not elsewhere specified or included), 2101 (extracts, essences and concentrates, of coffee, tea or maté…) and 2008 (fruit, nuts and other edible parts of plants, otherwise…). That link is how import data is matched to domestic producers, for example in trade-remedy cases.
It splits into 5 more detailed codes. The largest by establishments is 31199 (All Other Food Manufacturing) with 1,904.
